St. Martin's Wrestling - Metairie, Louisiana

1980 - Coach: Keith Hosli

State Results - 102.5 Points, 7th of 14 Teams, Division II.

Notables:    Steven Kantrow became St. Martin's' third State Champion with a 12-11 victory over Brusly's Wayne Prejean at 132#s. A tad later, Martin Muller became the fourth with a 12-4 victory over (the late) Tim McCall of South Cameron at 138#s.  Gary Sutton placed second at 167#s and Robert Landry placed second at 185#s only due to a ridiculous call by the referee.  Randy Ramp placed sixth at 145#s.  It should be noted that two-time third-place finisher Jeff Martin was injured prior to the state tournament, compliments of the Reverend Richard Smith of Bonnabel.

Jack Gordon - despite this picture, Jack is very high on the list of those who should have been state champions.

Martin Muller proving that the double-chicken-wing does work (vs. Jerry Schmidt of Brother Martin, and ref'd by Jerry's older brother Wayne). Martin Muller, State Champion at 138#s.  The hand symbol is from the Lafayette tournament that year when all of the Capitol kids kept saying "hang loose" with that gesture.

Martin Muller at the awards ceremony.  The late Tim McCall of South Cameron (runner-up) right, Robert Owens of Hahnville (third place) left. I only publish this picture because it is of myself looking at Gary Sutton after winning a free dinner at Burger King for the fastest pin at the Hahnville tournament.  I got the free dinner, but we must have irked our coaches something wicked, as we all had to walk back to the school from that Airline Highway Burger King.

I offer this photograph only because about five minutes prior to this match, Gilbert Joe of Jeanerette asked me to "go easy" on his little brother.
